Rambex Microgrid


The Rambex Microgrid is an independent off-grid energy system designed to provide safe, reliable, and sustainable power for remote and self-sufficient living. Suitable for homes, farms, islands, industrial sites, marinas, yachts, and ocean habitats, the Rambex Microgrid operates without dependence on traditional electrical infrastructure.

At the core of the system is compressed air energy storage. Solar energy powers an air compressor that compresses air up to 10 Bar and stores it inside the modular Rambex AirSphere storage units. When electricity is needed, the compressed air is released through the Rambex Air Motor, which drives a generator to produce electricity.

For smoother and more stable power delivery, the Rambex Air Motor is coupled with a flywheel system that helps regulate energy output and reduce fluctuations in demand.

Unlike chemical battery systems, the Rambex Microgrid is based on mechanical energy storage, offering a simpler, durable, and environmentally conscious alternative with reduced reliance on rare materials and complex recycling processes.

An additional benefit of the system is freshwater production. During the air compression and decompression process, moisture can be collected from the compressed air, allowing freshwater to be produced as a useful byproduct.

The Rambex Microgrid is designed for long-term independence, modular scalability, and sustainable energy generation — supporting a future of resilient off-grid living on land and at sea.

The Microgrid Setup

A typical Rambex Microgrid setup for an off-grid house or farm consists of the following 3 parts:

1) Sound-insulated small Shipping Container or 3m diameter Geodesic Dome containing:

  • Compressor
  • Air Motor
  • Flywheel and gearbox
  • Inverters
  • Controller, wiring, safety breakers, diodes, and a fuse box

From here, the cable is connected to your home and distributed to your lighting and electrical sockets.

2) Solar Panel Assemblies

A set of 450W solar panel assemblies mounted on 1.5m-high frames and positioned at an angle towards the sun. The number of panels depends on your power requirements. The more panels installed, the faster the compressor can fill the Rambex AirSpheres and the more powerful the system becomes.

3) Rambex AirSphere Storage Units

A set of Rambex AirSphere units installed either underground or above ground in a raft system. The number of spheres depends on your power requirements. The more AirSpheres installed, the more energy the system can store.

  • 25kWh / 48kW / 230V AC System — suitable for average homes and small farms
  • 120kWh / 48kW / 230V AC System — suitable for large homes, farms, workshops, and commercial applications
